JustServe Program and Website information

JustServe.org logo
Matching faith ,nonprofit, community and governmental organizations that need volunteers with volunteers willing to help.

In a combined 3rd hour meeting, we learned about a new program called JustServe. Here is some information regarding the program.

WHAT is JustServe?

  • JustServe is a cooperative effort between Church members, full-time missionaries and citizens of local communities to relieve suffering, care for the poor and needy, and enhance the quality of life in the community. It is a practical application of the Savior's admonition to "love thy neighbor as thyself." (Matthew 22:39)
  • Justserve.org is a volunteer matching website, designed and managed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
HOW can I help Implement JustServe?
  • Register at justserve.org (or download the free JustServe app from the Apple and Android App Stores) to quickly and easily submit or volunteer for projects in your area. The website supports the most recent 2 or 3 version of Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari. If you encounter problems with justserve.org, seek help through the "Feedback" button on the website while providing as much information as possible.
  • Volunteer. Charitable community service opportunities are available close to home for individuals, families, quorums, classes, auxiliaries, and wards. Neither Church members nor missionaries should volunteer in the community as a disguise for proselyting. Our motive should always be a pure desire to help others in need, regardless of their beliefs. Mormon Helping Hands t-shirts and vests should not be worn while participating in JustServe projects. Please save these for disaster relief or other priesthood assigned service projects as defined by your stake president.
  • Submit Projects to your stake JustServe committee or by clicking on the website "Submit" button. Projects must meet the following guidelines:
    • The best service opportunities are collaborative - working side by side with others in the community.
    • Humanitarian service opportunities should assist the poor and those in need of a helping hand.
    • Community service opportunities should enhance the quality of life in the community.
    • JustServe projects should not directly involve volunteers in fundraising, have a political focus, or be for - profit oriented. They can be donation based (canned food and clothing drives, etc.)
  • Share your positive experiences on justserve.org, in Church meetings and classes, and on social media while using the hashtag #justserve.
  • Tell your friends and neighbors about justserve.org, a free website available to everyone.
WHEN is it supposed to be done?
  • There is no timeline, requirement nor commitment to serve. When time and circumstances allow, JustServe makes it easier for Latter-day Saints and members of the community to find opportunities to serve those in need.
WHO do I contact with questions?
  • Your ward JustServe specialist (counselor in the bishopric), the stake director of public affairs, or any member of the stake JustServe committee can assist you.

Helping Hands Challenge

Over the next 3 months, we are asking for your participation in our Helping Hands Challenge. This is a project inspired by the Stake and being implemented within each ward. We invite you to do some sort of service for a sister in the ward and write it on a cut out hand (from the RS presidency) so it can be added to our tree in the Relief Society room. Only list the service you do on the hand.

This shouldn’t be a calling or assignment that you already have been given. This is separate from your visiting teaching, but could be for those you visit. This special service could be anything you choose and it could be done in secret. Please pray and seek inspiration about who you can help. Listen and follow through with the promptings you receive from the Spirit. If you are not sure who best needs your service, we will have a jar with names of sisters in the ward you can choose from to help guide your thoughts.

We encourage you to fill out more than one helping hand so we can fill our entire tree!

These will then be matched up to youth within or ward and stake. Please contact K.C. Merrill if you have any questions.

Visiting Teaching

This month, for visiting teaching the lesson is your choice! Pick from any of the General Conference talks in this months Ensign or from LDS.org. Remember to be Pleas "ant" for the month of May. Life is so much better when you meet or work with someone who is agreeable. Be that person and spread the joy of the gospel to your sisters. You never know when someone just needs a friendly smile. Visiting teaching can be a Pleas "ant " experience for you and your visiting teaching sisters.

Gardening Activity in April

We had a great time visiting the Community Garden in Safety Harbor and learned a lot of good information about gardening. It was wonderful seeing so many people come out and we were happy the rain waited to roll in until after we were done. I will be emailing out the handouts with more information, so please contact me if you don't see it in a few days and need a copy. The greatest resources are the University of South Florida and the IFAS (International Food or Agriculture Services). Below are some notes on what we discussed.
  • Your soil is very important. To make the best soil, you should have:
    • 1/3 parts Peet (the feathery stuff)
    • 1/3 parts vermiculite (for
    • 1/3 compost ( from either black cow or black hen)
  • Other good things for your soil could be:
    • Leaves - chopped up with the lawn mower and added to the soil adds air
    • Nitrogen, but you can't buy it in the summer and phoshorus
    • grass clippings
    • spanish moss can be used
    • straw
  • Watering Tips
    • First, keep plant moist
    • Water around the seeds, and at the start, water 1 or 2 times a day. Then you can go to 3 times a week.
    • Deep water gardening - water 1 inch to 3/4 inch deep (most of us thought that was where we've failed)
  • Don't just take a seed from a food you are eating and expect it to grow. Some fruits and vegetables have a male and female plant. For example Squash plant.
  • Rain Barrels are great for your home. If you don't have one in your yard yet, get one and use it!
  • Plastic strawberry containers make a great "greenhouse" to create starter plants for your garden.
  • Container Garden - in any container you could use weed cloth/ t-shirt,styrofoam, and make sure you have 8 inches of soil.
  • Willow Tree Nursery on 49th street by Biff Burgers is where the instructor buys her starter plants.
  • If you are making an outdoor gardening space, it is important have a designated walking area that is not where your vegetables are planted. Walking compacts the soil too much and doesn't allow proper "breathing".
  • It is helpful to know your good bugs and your bad bugs. Grasshoppers are bad with a garden.
  • There are other community gardens in Oldsmar and Dunedin.
  • When choosing seed packets, choose the ones for the South, and make sure you know the plants that go with the seasons. Don't try to plant a "winter plant" in the beginning of spring. We are currently in Late Spring (on 4/15)
  • You can check out Seed packets at the Dunedin Library and possibly Safety Harbor Library. All you need is a current library card. Seeds can be checked out just like books, DVD's, CD's. You can check out 3 packages a month. There are no due dates and never accrue late charges. Bring seeds to the front desk for Check out.
  • Dunedin Library does hold seminars at the library with the Dunedin Community garden each month. Upcoming classes are:
    • 5/9 - 10 am -12pm - The Edible Garden
    • 6/10 - 6:30 PM - Companion Planting
    • 7/18 - 10am - 12 PM - Build it and they will grow

    Prayers needed

Harlan C. (the son of Kristin and Clay) was rushed to the emergency room for a brain tumor earlier this week. Some ward members have chosen to fast for him today and tomorrow. Please fast or pray for him and his family if you feel inclined. Your efforts will not go to waste and are appreciated by the family.

    Breadmaking Recipes

Last month our Relief Society Activity was on Breadmaking. A big THANK YOU to Sis. Bishop for demonstrating and sharing with us her recipe and for those who brought bread samples for us to try. We were sent home with some bread baking tips. Enjoy the recipes below.

Melanie's Bread Recipe - makes 2 loaves, or 24 rolls
1/4 cup warm water (100-110 degrees)
2- 1/4 tsp or 1 pkg of yeast
    2 1/2 cup scalded milk (100-110 degrees)
Let sit for 10 minutes or when yeast bubbles

Mix into wet ingredients by hand and let foam another minute

3 Tbls oil (olive or vegetable)
    2 Tbls sugar
    1 tsp salt

Add in Flour - 7 heaping cups of flour (approx 8-10 cups). Mix 4 cups into liquid ingredients on low for 10 minutes. Mix remaining flour. Dough should not be sticky on your fingers.

Take dough out of bowl, kneed, and spray bowl with cooking spray before putting back in the bowl. Cover with a moist towel. Leave on stove while the oven is warming up or in the microwave. Let rise for approx. 2 hrs (it should touch the towel over the top).

Kneed dough again for another 10 minutes. You want it to be elastic-y. Let rise again approx 1 hr.

Break dough into 2 loaves, shape dough, place in pan. If you are adding anything to your bread, do so now. Fold in corners and place in pan. Let rise again approx. 30 minutes in baking pan or (raises above the pan).

Bake at 395 degrees for 12 minutes and then at 325 degrees for 1 hour. Take out to cool. Take butter cube and melt it on top of the bread while cools.

Other notes: Kneeding - you can't over Kneed! Make sure you don't use too much flour on the surface you are kneeding on, as it goes into the dough. Kneed for 10 minutes for more fluffy bread. To kneed- flatten out dough, push through it, fold in 1/2, repeat.

    Apple Cinnamon Bread
1/3 cup brown sugar (not packed)
    1 tsp ground cinnamon
    2/3 cup white sugar
    1/2 cup butter, softened
    2 eggs
    1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups all- purpose flour
    1 3/4 tsp baking powder
    1/2 cup milk
    1 apple, peeled and chopped

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a 9 x 5- inch loaf pan. Mix brown sugar and cinnamon together in a bowl and set aside. Beat white sugar and butter together in a bowl using an electric mixer until smooth and creamy. Beat in eggs, 1 at a time, until incorporated; add vanilla extract.

Combine flour and baking powder together in another bowl;stir into creamed butter mixture. Mix milk into batter until smooth. Pour half the batter into the prepared loaf pan. Next add half the apples and half the brown sugar mixture. Lightly pat apple mixture into batter.

Pour the remaining batter over apple layer;top with remaining apples and add more brown sugar/cinnamon mixture. Lightly pat apples into batter; swirl brown sugar mixture through apples using a finger or spoon. Bake in preheated oven until a toothpick inserted in the center of the loaf comes out clean, 30 to 40 minutes.

    Hearth Bread
This recipe, also known as  "The easiest loaf of bread you'll ever bake" appears on the back of some of the King Arthur Flour bags.

1 Tbls (1 packet) active dry yeast
1 Tbls sugar (we use 1tsp of sugar)
1 Tbls salt (we use 1/2 tsp salt)
2 cups warm water (not over 110 degrees)
5 1/2 to 6 cups King Arthur Unbleached All- Purpose Flour
    cornmeal
    boiling water

To mix: Mix together the first four ingredients. Let this stand until the yeast, sugar and salt are dissolved. Gradually add the flour to the liquid and mix thoroughly until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface to knead. (This may be a little messy, but don't give up!)

Knead it: Fold the far edge of the dough back over on itself towards you. Press into the dough with the heels of your hands and push away. After each push, rotate the dough 90 degrees. Repeat this process in a rhythmic, rocking motion for 5 minutes, sprinkling only enough flour on your kneading surface to prevent sticking. Let the dough rest while you scrape out and grease the mixing bowl. Knead the dough again for 2 to 3 minutes.

Let it Rise: Return the dough to the bowl and turn it over once to grease the top. Cover with a damp towel and keep warm until the dough doubles in bulk, about 1 to 2 hours.

Shape it: Punch down the dough with your fist and briefly knead out any air bubbles. Cut the dough in half and shape into two Italian or French style loaves. Place the loaves on a cookie sheet generously sprinkled with cornmeal. Let the loaves rest for 5 minutes.

Bake it: Lightly slash the tops of the loaves 3 or more times diagonally and brush them with cold water. Place on rack in a cold oven with a roasting pan full of boiling water on the oven bottom. Bake at 400 degrees for 35-45 minutes, until the crust is golden brown and sounds hollow to the touch.

For a lighter, crustier break, let your shaped loaves rise for 45 minutes. Preheat the oven and roasting pan with water to 500 degrees for 15 minutes. Brush the loaves with cold water, place in the oven and bake for 10 minutes. Lower the temperature to 400 degrees and bake for 10 more minutes. Remove from the oven, let cool.

For a heartier, more nutritious bread, substitute 2 cups of King Arthur Traditional Whole Wheat Flour for 2 cups of King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour.

    90 Minute Bread
    4 Tbls Yeast
    4 cups warm water
    1/2 cup sugar
    4 tsp salt
    1/4 cup oil
9 cups flour (whole wheat, white or any combination of both

Mix ingredients in order given. Kneed until soft, but not sticky. Rest 15 minutes. Knead for 1 minute. Divide into three loaves and place in 3 greased and floured loaf pans. Let rise for 30 minutes. Bake for 30 minutes. Dough can be used for dinner rolls or pizza on a cookie sheet. Makes 3 loaves.

Our next RS activity is on March 19th. We will be having a beginning sewing class at 7:00 PM. We will be making Pajama pants. Please bring your daughters ages 8+ and your sewing machine (only if you have one) and join us. We will have some sewing machines available to use, but if you are willing to let us "loan your's for the night"  please contact someone in the RS Presidency ( Sis. Yoannon, Sis. Marshall or Sis. Bishop).

Saturday, March 28th is the Relief Society Broadcast at 8:00 PM. We will be combined with the Palm Harbor ward. Please stay tuned for further details on when we will be meeting that night.

The "ants" go marching two by two

We had our visiting teaching conference at the end of January during Relief Society. It was great to have all the sister together in the same room, we were filled to capacity! We had fun watching a skit with a few "ANTS" from the colony. They came to help us to remember:

Visiting Teaching is the Pure Love of Christ in Action!

We are Administering in his Behalf

Some Visiting Teaching routes have been changed a bit due to people moving in and out of the ward. If you are not sure who you visit or need your list, please contact Suzanne Smith our Visiting Teaching Coordinator. Also, please remember to report your visiting teaching at the each month to your Supervisor, or Suzanne directly if you are unsure who to contact.
